The inspiration behind our K-9 program
The creation of OTEPD K-9 INC. and our K-9 program stems from a deep personal passion and a professional understanding of the invaluable role trained police dogs play in law enforcement. A single K-9 can clear a building in minutes, a task that would take multiple officers significantly longer. With a sense of smell 700 times more sensitive than humans, K-9s are crucial for locating narcotics, explosives, or missing persons. This remarkable efficiency leads to faster arrests, reduced man-hours, and lower operational costs. Furthermore, a K-9 unit protects officers during high-risk situations, deterring suspects and minimizing injuries. This blend of efficiency, safety, and effectiveness inspired the foundation of our program.
Our goals for a safer, stronger community
The main goals of our K-9 program are deeply rooted in serving the Edwardsburg community. We aim to achieve enhanced public safety and crime prevention by deterring illegal activity and improving response times, making neighborhoods safer for everyone. We also strive to build community trust and engagement through positive interactions, and to foster education and awareness about the vital work our K-9 unit performs. In times of crisis, our K-9s will offer support and comfort. Crucially, the program significantly contributes to officer safety during dangerous encounters. Our commitment extends beyond patrolling; it’s about creating a truly secure and connected community.
Meet Officer Terry Burrows
Officer Terry Burrows joined the Ontwa Township Edwardsburg Police Department in August 2022 after graduating from the KVCC Police Academy in Kalamazoo, MI. Currently assigned to road patrol, Officer Burrows is the driving force behind establishing a K-9 program for his department and the community he serves. His dedication goes beyond typical duties; he is deeply committed to interacting with the community on both personal and professional levels. This program, OTEPD K-9 INC., is a separate 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization, fueled by Officer Burrows' vision to bring this essential service to Edwardsburg, Michigan.
